Massimo Giorgetti deserves applause for injecting a dash of unpredictability into MSGM’s latest showcase, steering clear of the ordinary. Departing from conventional venues, Giorgetti opted for an unconventional setting, literally going beneath the surface and claiming the Porta Venezia station of the Milanese subway as his fashion runway.

Giorgetti proudly highlights his ties to all things Milanese; seizing the occasion of the city’s subway marking its 60th anniversary, he aligns MSGM with a celebrated example of Italian design finesse from the ’60s. The subway’s typography and tubular curved handrails, crafted in 1964 by the stylish designer Franco Albini, provided inspiration. Giorgetti collaborated with the Franco Albini Foundation to incorporate the handrail’s curved shape as a decorative motif. Whether pinned as a brooch on a hoodie or jacquarded onto a sleek black city coat, its distinctive red hue echoed throughout the collection. A model even showcased the original handrail prototype as a sort of fashionable accessory — a testament to Giorgetti’s preference for letting his references speak for themselves.

Taking a departure from MSGM’s typical exuberance, the collection presents a more restrained approach, yet it preserves the optimistic energy synonymous with Giorgetti’s style. Steering clear of delving into philosophical musings, Giorgetti addresses meaningful issues with an authentic light-heartedness. In discussing speed, Giorgetti poses additional questions: “Is this what we consider growing up, aging, and existing? Do we truly achieve maturity?” Perhaps, the designer’s whimsical final designs pay homage to his childhood memories—the lively, innocent mindset that shields one from profound contemplations. Ultimately, life unfolds as a race against the ticking clock.
